Vanity Ⅰ

Oil, acrylic, gold leaf, thread on canvas, 45″ x 52″, 2024

Vanity invites the viewer into the most intimate of spaces: the bathroom. This sanctuary of self-care is loaded with material comforts like plush towels, makeup and an embroidered cosmetic bag, all set against a soothing teal pattern designed to help you prep your best synthetic self for the world. However, while you’re busy with your rituals, Mother Nature is staging a silent coup, with snakes and a looming alligator literally eating the scenery. The mirror is a total ghost—a pitch-black void that refuses to show you your own reflection. It’s a cheeky “conscience check” that denies your ego its digital validation, forcing you to face the wild, tangible reality that remains once all the filters are stripped away.

Provenance Note: Vanity was acquired by the RISD Museum in 2025 for their permanent collection.
