Tiffany Twisted- this painting is part of my Hotel California Series which focuses on my internal conflicts with today’s world and technology and how the line between what is reality and what is not is rapidly diminishing. Lately, I find myself in a constant mental roller-coaster between a sense of deep nostalgia for the tangible vs my indulgence of an altered, often, superficial reality. Through this painting, I am exploring how certain entities are using this as a weapon for power and control while I am confronting an internal perception of continuously being surveilled & monitored. The eyes play off of this idea of being watched, yet they are in suspended mirrors- so perhaps, I am just reflecting my own paranoia-maybe it’s not real and simply a construct of my imagination? The eyes/mirrors may also represent that I have perhaps trapped myself into an unreality hence why the eyes are part of the ornament The blue birds, on the other hand, which are were often portrayed in historical ornament & wallpapers are now real-a reversal of roles due to my diminished sense of reality -the birds are now the free ones, representing freedom and the natural life, (which ironically is what they represented in historical papers to begin with). Ribbons which were also frequently depicted in historical wallpapers are now also more tangible. The “painted wallpaper in the back” continues along this narrative through its little symbols.
